Blockburger On Pac-10 Cross Country All-Academic First Team
Nov. 25, 2008
UA sophomore Reed Blochberger was named to the Pac-10's Cross Country All-Academic first team Tuesday afternoon, the conference announced Tuesday afternoon. Blochberger holds a 4.0 GPA as an undeclared sophomore.
He was joined by fellow sophomore Jordan Mara, whose 3.68 GPA in Pre-Business earned the distance runner second team honors. On the women's side, senior Marissa Urban earned second team honors for her second season in a row. Urban holds a 3.92 GPA in English and French and has been impressive in the classroom throughout her college career.
Blochberger's most impressive performance of the season came at the first meet of the season at the George Kyte Classic in Flagstaff, Ariz. Blochberger paced the team at the meet, finishing third overall. Throughout the season, Blochberger was consistently one of the top-five men on the squad and was a valuable asset to their 12th place finish at the NCAA West Regional Championships.
Mara had a decent season for the Wildcats, topped by a 12th place overall finish at the George Kyte Classic. Mara has been named a team captain for the 2009 Men's Track and Field team, as well.
Urban has been one of the UA's top distance runners throughout her career as a Wildcat. After Urban wraps up the track and field season and her final semester at Arizona, she hopes to attend law school.
The total of six UA athletes on the list surpassed last year's total of five, and two more men made this year's team than last year's team. Throughout the year's, Arizona cross country has always been a driving force in the classroom and this year's honors help to emphasize the point.
