Nov. 28, 2008
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- The California men's soccer team will face Maryland (19-3-0) in the third round of the NCAA Tournament Saturday, Nov. 29 at 1 p.m. ET in College Park, Md. The Golden Bears (12-3-5) defeated the Terrapins, 1-0, earlier this season at Drake Stadium on the campus of UCLA.
Maryland marks the second team that Cal will play in the NCAA Tournament that it had previously faced during the regular season. The Golden Bears shut out the Terrapins, 1-0, on Aug. 31. SO MF Servando Carrasco scored the game-winner in the 87th minute of play to give then-No. 13 California the upset over then-No. 3 Maryland.
The regular season match on Aug. 31 was the first ever meeting between the Bears and Terrapins. First-Team All-Pac-10 goalkeeper Stefan Frei is the only keeper to hold the Terrapins scoreless this year. He has totaled nine shutouts on the season thus far.
