Cougars Fall in odwalla Classic Opening Round
Nov. 28, 2008
SAN FRANCISCO, Calf. - Freshman Jazmine Perkins scored a game-high 28 points, but the Washington State University women's basketball team was unable to overcome a first-half deficit, falling to Northern Colorado 86-79 in the first round of the odwalla Classic at War Memorial Gym. The Cougars fell to 2-2 on the season, while the Bears improved to 3-1.
The 28 points scored by Perkins are tied for the most by a Cougar freshman in WSU NCAA women's basketball history. Nikki Mohr is the only other Cougar freshman to score 28 points in an NCAA game - 25 years ago against Puget Sound (Nov. 26, 1983).
'It's disappointing for us to come down here and not play better,' WSU Head Coach June Daugherty said. 'I thought our team was ready to go.'
The Cougars found themselves down at halftime for the first time this season. Sparked by an 8-of-12 shooting performance from the 3-point line, Northern Colorado carried a 47-27 lead into intermission. The Bears shot 65.4 percent from the floor in the first half, including 66.7 percent from the 3-point line, while the Cougars hit only 1-of-9 first half 3-point attempts, and shot only 32.4 percent from the field.
'You can't give up those kind of 3-pointers and expect to get into any rhythm,' Daugherty said. 'They came out with fire in their eyes, and we came out cold.'
WSU outscored the Bears 52-39 in the second half, and turned the ball over only twice in the second stanza, but the 20-point deficit was too much to overcome. Two Cougar runs brought the Cougars back into the game, but the final margin of seven points was as close as the Cougars would get.
'It was great to see a comeback like what we were able to do, but we should never have been in that kind of deficit,' Daugherty said.
The Cougars outrebounded Northern Colorado 41-33, and turned the ball over a season-low eight times on the game.
WSU will square off against tournament host San Francisco in the final round of the odwalla Classic, Sunday at 2 p.m.
