Dec. 1, 2008
LOS ANGELES - Senior Ali Daley was named Pacific-10 Conference Player of the Week on Monday after helping the Bruins to a pair of victories over ranked foes last week.
Daley had 20 kills against #23 Pepperdine last Tuesday and followed that up with a 15-kill performance in a three-set sweep of #11 USC on Friday. Daley averaged 5.00 kills per set for the two matches, as well as 3.14 digs per set.
On Tuesday, she finished just one dig shy of a double-double against the Waves, adding nine digs with her season-best 20 kills. Daley took 65 swings, just one off a career high.
Against the Trojans, Daley led the Bruins with 15 kills and added 13 digs for her 12th double-double of the season. In both wins last week, Daley had the match-clinching kill to cap off a Bruin victory. Against USC, the Bruins scored the final seven points to turn a 24-19 deficit into a 26-24 triumph. During the final run, Daley had a hand in five of the points, recording four kills and a block assist.
Daley enters the postseason first on the team in kills per set at 3.08 and points per set (3.68) and is second in digs per set at 2.91. She has led the Bruins in kills in each of the last five matches, as well as a team-best 11 contests this season.
The Player of the Week award is the first for a Bruin since Nov. 6, 2006 (Nana Meriwether) and the 58th in UCLA history.
The Bruins, ranked ninth in the final regular-season Bison/AVCA Coaches Poll and seeded 14th in the NCAA Tournament, host the first and second rounds on Friday and Saturday at Pauley Pavilion. UCLA takes on LSU at 8 p.m. on Friday, which will be preceeded by a first-round match between San Francisco and Duke at 5:30 p.m. The winners of Friday's contests will play Saturday at 7 p.m. for the right to advance to the Austin, Texas Regional.
