Pac-10 Q & A with Bobby McCoy, Arizona Track and Field

Dec. 2, 2008

A few minutes spent with Arizona sprinter Bobby McCoy...

Bobby McCoy, a standout senior on the Arizona track and field team, enters his final season of indoors eligibility. During the 2008 season, McCoy competed for the first time as a pure track athlete after leaving the football team. A 400-meter specialist, McCoy raced to a fourth place and All-American finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships in his marquee event. At the Pac-10 Outdoor Championships, he ran an all-time best in the event of 45.31, also good for fourth place. That mark is the all-time best at Arizona in the 400-meter distance. McCoy was named as a team captain for the Wildcats' 2009 campaign.

Something about yourself that others would be surprised to hear... I'm the best Guitar Hero player of anyone I know. People try to challenge me, but I'm an Expert level player. I don't like specific song selections, either; I prefer the random setting because it showcases real, not memorized, skill.

Favorite track workout... Interval set of 10x300. I'm usually fairly comfortable until number eight; the last two 300s require extreme mental strength and physical determination. Done the right way, this workout pushes me in unbelievable ways - I can literally feel my improvement as an athlete.

The sport you're worst at... Golf - the real game, not miniature golf. I'm lousy at the driving range. I can't putt. I guess you could say I lack the rhythm required for that game.

Favorite moment in a competition... I'm motivated by the competitiveness of my teammates. If our team gets off to a great start in a meet, I get excited to produce a race of equally impressive quality. Ashley Van Hoey,  a sprint specialist on our women's side, improved tremendously in her 400m last year. Watching her excel week in and week out really inspired me to raise my level of competitiveness.

On my iPod... I like underground music: Zero, T-Pain, and Young Jeezy.

If you were stranded on an island, what are the three essentials you'd need to have?... I would definitely need to have lasagna. Other than that, I'd choose a Guitar Hero set-up and a few teammates. It would be no fun to have Guitar Hero on an island and no one to play against!

Favorite teams as a kid... I'm from Texas, so obviously the Dallas Cowboys. I also liked the Jordan-era Chicago Bulls. My favorite college football team was the Gators.

Any track stars you looked up to?... Michael Johnson. The speed he reached in the 200m was crazy! He was a student of the sport, and seemed to win in a very classy way.

If you could cook dinner for one person, dead or alive, who would it be?... My 97-year old great-grandma, who passed away last summer. I didn't get to spend much time with her at the end of her life. I'd like the opportunity to be with her one more time, and to be there for her in a time of need.

What would you serve her for dinner?... My great-grandma loved breakfast, so I would give her the morning works! Biscuits were her favorite, plus we'd have bacon and buttermilk pancakes.

What is the best advice you've received, and from whom?... My mom drove me to Tempe (Ariz.) from Houston before my freshman year. It was a 19-hour drive; when we got tired of listening to music, we talked for awhile. She instilled in me that I truly can accomplish anything I set my mind to. After we reflected on what I've already accomplished to get to the here-and-now, I really took her words to heart.

Attribute I like most about myself... I'm funny. I am able to bring humor to workouts, which helps the whole team. When we're nearing the end of our 10x300s, making my teammates laugh between repeats seems to make the pain subside. We had a girl on the team who had to wear a Band-aid for a few days; one day it fell off and she screamed, 'Band-aid!' in the middle of workout. Now every time I pass her, I scream the same thing and it always makes her smile.

Head laughing

To wrap up the Q & A, Bobby made a personal shout-out to the entire Arizona track and field team!
