Dec. 3, 2008
BERKELEY, Calif. - Fresh off clinching a school-record 13 victories in Pac-10 play, the No. 8-ranked California volleyball team will host the first and second rounds of the 2008 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship. The Golden Bears finished 23-6 and took third place in the conference with a 13-5 record to make their school-record seventh consecutive appearance in the NCAA tournament. One of 16 teams in the University Park Region, Cal holds the eighth overall seed and welcomes three teams to Haas Pavilion where it has dropped just two matches this season, both to teams ranked in the top five. The Bears will face eight-time Metro-Atlantic Athletic Conference champion Siena College (20-12, 15-3 MAAC) in the first round. New Mexico State (25-8, 15-1 WAC) takes on St. Mary's College (20-7, 10-4 WCC) in the other first round match. The winners will square off in the second round for the right to advance to the regional championship held on the campus of defending NCAA champion, No. 1-ranked Penn State (32-0, 20-0 Big Ten). Last year, the Bears reached new program heights as they advance to the NCAA semifinal where they fell, 3-0, to the Nittany Lions.
