Cal Concludes First Day of Georgia Fall Invitational
Dec. 5, 2008
Athens, Ga. - The fifth-ranked California women's swimming team opened the 2008 Georgia Fall Invitational with a solid performance with a team score of 248.5 points (second place) at the Gabrielsen Natatorium on Friday evening.
The quartet of Madison Kennedy, Tara Thomas, Dana Vollmer and Liv Jensen captured second place in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a season-best and NCAA provisional time of 1:29.29. The same foursome clocked a 1:29.28 two weeks earlier at the Art Adamson Invitational at Texas A&M, but it was ruled later that night that times for all competing teams were not counted because of an official measurement done by the Strong Surveying company at the conclusion of the day's events, the Natatorium pool was found to be just over one inch short.
Junior Blake Hayter had her best performance of the year and nearly set a personal-best with a fifth-place time of 4:42.27 (also an NCAA B cut) in the 500-yard freestyle. Her lifetime best is 4:42.05 set at the 2007 NCAA Championships. Hayter had a preliminary time of 4:43.97 earlier in the morning.
Lauren Boyle also swam her best time in the 500 free this season with a time of 4:45.78 in the prelims and a 4:46.00 (seventh place) in the final. Shelley Harper finished behind Boyle with a time of 4:47.56. She too registered a season-best time of 4:46.44, nearly 10 seconds faster than her 500 free time on Oct. 18, in the prelims.
Vollmer took sixth place in the finals of the 200 IM with a time of 2:00.65.
Senior Emily Verdin clocked a lifetime best time of 2:01.94 in the consolation final of the 200 IM. Her previous best was 2:02.69 at the 2008 Pac-10 Championships. Courtney Eronemo lowered her previous time of 2:07.19 on Oct. 20 with a 2:02.45 in the consolation final as well.
Kennedy, along with Georgia's Jessica Cole, placed second in the 50-yard freestyle with a season-best 22.49. Kennedy, who holds the school record with a time of 21.87, clocked a 23.56 earlier in the year against Texas.
Jensen came in fifth with a 50 free time of 22.82, while Thomas established a new personal mark of 22.79 (her previous was 22.80 at the 2008 NCAAs) in the consolation final.
The meet continues on Saturday with the 200 yard medley relay; 400 yard individual medley; 100 yard butterfly; 200 yard free; 100 yard breaststroke and 800 yard freestyle relay. Live results can be found on CalBears.com by accessing the 'schedule/results' link on the women's swimming page.
