Five Huskies Earn Pac-10 All-Academic Women's Soccer Honors

Dec. 5, 2008

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Five University of Washington women's soccer players were named to the 2008 Pac-10 All-Academic team, the conference announced on Thursday, led by first-team selection Dana Stirn.

Stirn, a fifth-year senior, recently completed her undergraduate degree in Political Science with a 3.77 grade point average. Currently a graduate student in UW's Intercollegiate Athletics Leadership program, Stirn recently received the prestigious Scott Greenwood Memorial post-graduate scholarship, awarded annually to an outstanding Husky athlete who excels in athletics, academics and community service. This is her first Pac-10 All-Academic honor.

On the field, the Tacoma, Wash., native completed a full-circle comeback in 2008 after suffering through several injuries throughout her career. After starting for most of her freshman season and helping UW advance to the NCAA Elite Eight for the first time in program history, Stirn suffered a series of injuries over the next three seasons which kept her off the field. She returned this season from another early-season injury to play in 11 games and help the Huskies return to the postseason for the first time since that 2004 run.

Four Huskies were named Honorable Mention All-Academic, including sophomores Tess Bartlett and Kendyl Pele and juniors Lindsey Kasser and Veronica Perez.

Bartlett, who has a 3.41 grade point average, is also majoring in political science. She earned her first career honor, as did Kendyl Pele, who carries a 3.40 grade point average as a pre-major.

Perez, the Huskies leader on the field with 13 goals and 31 points, was also solid off the pitch, compiling a 3.05 grade point average as a sociology major. She was also named to the All-Pac-10 second team after leading UW to a third-place conference tie with defending national champion USC. Rounding out the group of Huskies was Kasser, a junior defender who carries a 3.24 grade point average in communications. Kasser was one of six Huskies to start all 22 matches this season, anchoring a Husky defense that allowed just 1.38 goals per game.

To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average, be either a starter or significant contributor and have completed one academic year at the current institution.
