Women of Troy Drop Second-Straight Game

Laie, HI--The Women of Troy drop their second-straight game to the BYU Cougars in the Hukilau Invitational at BYU Hawaii on Saturday (Dec. 6). The loss drops USC's record to 4-3 and brings BYU to 5-2.
The Cougars struck first, with a jump shot from senior center Cassie King. USC quickly equalized with a two-pointer from sophomore center Kari LaPlante. USC settled in and two back-to-back three-pointers from freshman guard Ashley Corral, gave USC a six-point lead, 10-4 at the 15:34 mark. With 15:17 left in the half King made a jump shot for the Cougars, cutting into USC's lead, 10-6. That shot by King started BYU on a 14-3 run that lasted until USC's junior forward Aarika Hughes broke in with 9:32 in the half, draining a two-pointer, to put the score 18-15, BYU. A jump shot from USC senior center Nadia Parker with 9:27 left in the half cut the lead to 18-17 and started USC on a 10-0 run of their own. The 10-0 run was capped off by a tip-in from freshman guard Briana Gilbreath, giving USC a six-point lead, 24-18 with 8:07 to go in the half. BYU cut the lead to two with 6:53 to go, but that is as close as the Cougars would get in the first half. A jump shot and layup from senior guard Camille LeNoir on two consecutive possessions gave USC a seven point lead, 30-27 at the 2:47 mark. A layup from junior guard Heather Oliver with 2:11 left to go gave USC the biggest lead of the game, nine points, 32-23. A three-pointer from BYU's sophomore guard Jazmine Foreman cut the lead to six with 1:57 to go. Gilbreath hit a two-pointer to put USC back up by eight, by with 1:15 left sophomore forward Coriann Wood hit a jumper, to draw BYU within six and USC would go into the break with a 34-28 lead.
At the half, the Women of Troy were led by Corral and Gilbreath, each with 6 points. Junior forward Aarika Hughes added five points and pulled down five rebounds. The Cougars were led by Foreman and King, each with 10 points.The Women of Troy started out the second half quick, with Gilbreath hitting a jumper to put USC up again by eight, 36-28. USC's lead would be cut to three by the 16:58 mark, but a two-pointer by Parker would put USC back up, 40-35. However a quick jump shot by King and a three-pointer by senior guard Shawnee Slade would tie the game up for BYU, 40-40 with 15:33 left in the game. For the next seven and a half minutes USC and BYU would trade baskets, keeping the game close, within two points. Two quick three-pointers, one from senior guard Brynn Cameron, who finished 3-4 from three-point range and another added by Hughes gave USC a five-point lead with 8:30 left. BYU would just not go away, and despite another three from Cameron with 6:56 left, BYU would tie the game back up 56-56 with 5:14 left in the game. Two free throws by Gilbreath put USC up 60-58 with 2:58 to go. A three-pointer by BYU's sophomore guard Mindy Nielson at the two minute mark gave them the lead, 61-60. USC went to work on the defensive side of the ball and Gilbreath blocked Nielson's three-point attempt with 1:15 left. Gilbreath then got the rebound and threw a quick outlet pass to Hughes who laid one in to give the Women of Troy a one point lead, 62-61. With 48 seconds left Slade hit a jumper for BYU, putting them ahead, 63-62. A reverse lay-up by LeNoir was missed on the other end and with 21 seconds USC was forced to foul, putting Foreman on the line for BYU. Foreman sunk both free throws, to put the Cougars up by two, 65-62. With 18 seconds left USC drove down the court and called a timeout, to set up the last play. The Women of Troy were looking for a three-pointer to tie the game. LeNoir missed her first three-point attempt out of the timeout with 12 seconds left. Corral nabbed the offensive board and USC got a second chance. BYU played tight defense, but LeNoir was able to put up another three, although this attempt also came up short. With two seconds left, Parker grabbed the rebound and put it in back in as time expired, leaving USC with a 65-64 loss.
The Women of Troy were led in scoring by Gilbreath with 11. Hughes followed closely with 10 points. Parker led USC in rebounds with eight. BYU was led by Foreman who finished with 19 points and Wood pulled down eight rebounds.
USC will return to Los Angeles for six-straight games of home cooking, starting with a match-up against Montana State at 4 p.m. on Dec. 13. USC will then host the Women of Troy Basketball Classic, which will feature a match-up with Duke at 8 p.m. on Dec. 19 and a 4:45 p.m. start on Dec. 20 against Harvard.
