Cal-Missouri Postame Quotes
Dec. 7, 2008
California head coach Mike Montgomery
On whether he was surprised by the effectiveness of Missouri's pressure against the Golden Bears:
No, they were just really ready to play. Credit to them. They were faster, longer, more aggressive than anything we've seen thus far and we didn't handle it well. We couldn't transition back, we couldn't rebound the ball and they shot the ball extremely well. I think the pressure was mainly ourselves, self-inflicted damage we did to ourselves. But they were very, very aggressive, very ready to play and really got us back on our heels, which is what [Tigers coach Mike Anderson] wants to do with his pressure and we fell complete prey to it.
On whether there was anything the Tigers did that surprised him:
They did what we knew was their objective to do; it's just a question of whether you allow them to do it, and we allowed they to do it. They came off the bench strong. They shot the ball very well. They made a lot of shots where maybe we were in the proper position and they just shot it over us. They didn't give us a lot of opportunities and when they did, they offensively rebounded it. They had 20 offensive rebounds, which is an extraordinary number. I would just say as a general rule they were quicker than us across the board.
On whether it was Missouri's style, Cal's effort or a combination of both that added up to today's defeat:
Different teams provide different problems for everybody. Their style, I think if I were to pick something that I would prefer not to play [against], that would be it: full-court pressure, athletic across the board, no real low-post guy [and] they took any size we've had out of the game. It was not a great matchup for us drawing it up to start with. When they play as well as they did and we didn't compete very hard at stretches out there, we got pretty much what we deserved.
