Cal Takes Second Place at the Georgia Fall Invite with 766.5 Points

Dec. 7, 2008

Athens, Ga. - Five lifetime-bests were achieved by Cal women's swimmers on Sunday, as the Golden Bears wrapped up the 2008 Georgia Fall Invitational in second place with 766.5 points. Host Georgia finished in first place.

'This invitational gave us a good indication of where we need to be come March,' said head coach Teri McKeever. 'We had a great weekend, and a really good three weeks. Georgia is a quality team and they really have improved from where they were last season. For us to be the best we have to compete against the best. I was real pleased with the effort and attitude of the girls this weekend.'

Cal won't be back competing in the pool until January 30, but McKeever explained that the team will continue to focus on dry land exercises, weight room conditioning and continuous work in the pool.

Sophomore Amanda Sims achieved a lifetime best and first-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:55.57 - fifth on Cal's all-time top 10 performance list (also an NCAA B time). Freshman Shelley Harper also clocked a lifetime-best 2:01.19 in the morning preliminaries, before registering a seventh-place time of 2:01.35, followed by sophomore Hannah Wilson who touched the wall in eighth place with a time of 2:02.47. Wilson swam a time of 1:59.74 in the prelims - her best at Cal.

Junior Alexandra Ellis placed third in the final of the 200-yard breaststroke with a lifetime-best 2:11.99, and now third on Cal's all-time top 10 performance chart. Senior Natalie LaRochelle also reached a personal-best with her seventh-place finish time of 2:18.44 as well.

Sophomore Tara Thomas captured a third place finish in the 100-yard freestyle final with a lifetime-best mark of 48.91, 0.42 seconds lower than her previous best 49.33. The 48.91 moves her to sixth on Cal's all-time top 10 performance chart as well. Wilson (49.29), Madison Kennedy (49.39) and Liv Jensen (50.11) finished fourth, fifth and eighth respectively.

In the final event of the evening, Cal's foursome of Kennedy, Thomas, Wilson and Jensen clocked a second place time of 3:16.01 in the 400-yard freestyle relay behind first place Georgia's foursome that swam a 3:14.28.
