ASU's Kingma Selected Pac-10 Scholar-Athlete of the Year

TEMPE, Ariz. – Jenna Kingma, a senior member of the Arizona State University cross country program, has been selected as the 2008 Women’s Cross Country Pac-10 Scholar-Athlete of the Year, presented by Toyo Tires, the Conference announced. Kingma is one of six student-athletes from around the league that was selected as the top scholar-athlete in his/her sport with selections also announced in men’s cross country, football, soccer (men’s and women’s) and volleyball.
Kingma has carried a 3.63 grade-point average in marketing while also competing as one of the top athletes on the Sun Devil squad. A four-time competitor at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, Kingma recently placed 95th overall at the 2008 NCAA meet, the third-highest finish on the team. She earned All-West Region honors by finishing 18th at the NCAA West Region Championships two weeks after placing 24th at the Pac-10 Championships. Kingma also posted an impressive run at the Roy Griak Invitational in Minnesota earlier in the year by finishing third overall.
Outside of athletic competition, the San Luis Obispo, Calif., native recently earned Honorable Mention Academic All-Pac-10 in 2008, her third academic honor in cross country, and has been twice selected the Academic All-Pac-10 Second Team in track and field. A two-time USTFCCCA National Academic selection in track & field, Kingma has helped the ASU women’s track & field teams to being named the 2007 and 2008 USTFCCCA National Indoor and Outdoor Academic Team of the Year.
Joining Kingma as honorees in the fall were: Galen Rupp of Oregon (men’s cross country), Alex Mack of California (football), Nicole Dobrzynski of Oregon (women’s soccer), George John of Washington (men’s soccer) and Cynthia Barboza of Stanford (volleyball). Each student-athletes’ respective university will receive $1,000 toward its general athletic scholarship fund in honor of the recipient.
Each honoree had to meet four criteria, including being a senior (in athletic eligibility), carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher, participate in 50-percent or more of his/her team’s competitions and have been at his/her respective institution for more than one year. The Pac-10 and Toyo Tires will announce more recipients throughout the remainder of the academic calendar.
