Dec. 8, 2008
Walnut Creek, Calif. -
Tailback Jahvid Best of California and linebacker Rey Maualuga of USC have been named U.S. Bank Pac-10 Players of the Week in football, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced.
Best, a sophomore from Vallejo, Calif., had a record-setting performance in California's 48-7 win against Washington. Best rushed 19 times for a school-record 311 yards (16.4-yard average) and four touchdowns covering 60, 1, 20 and 84 yards. The 311 yards rushing is a California single-game record and the fourth-highest single-game performance in Pac-10 history. The California offense piled up 549 yards total offense, including 431 yards rushing, and did not commit a turnover.
Maualuga, a senior from Eureka, Calif., anchored the USC defense in the Trojans' 28-7 win against UCLA. The All-America linebacker posted a team-high five tackles, all solo, and had a pass deflection as the USC defense limited the Bruins to seven first downs and 157 yards total offense (47 rushing, 110 passing). UCLA was forced to punt 10 times and the Bruins penetrated the red zone just once all game.
The player of the week honors were the third for Best this season and the second for Maualuga.
Also nominated for player of the week were defensive end Tyson Alualu of California on defense and quarterback Mark Sanchez of USC on offense.
