Jahvid Best Named Pac-10 Player of the Week
Dec. 8, 2008
BERKELEY - Cal sophomore tailback Jahvid Best has been named the Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Week for the third time this season, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced Monday.
Best had a record-setting performance in Cal's 48-7 win against Washington last Saturday. He rushed 19 times for a school-record 311 yards (16.4-yard average) and four touchdowns covering 60, 1, 20 and 84 yards. The 311 yards rushing is the fourth-highest single-game performance in Pac-10 history and fourth best in the country this year. The Cal offense piled up 549 yards total offense, including 431 yards rushing, and did not commit a turnover.
Best also claimed the Pac-10 honor after rushing for 200 yards at Washington State and for 201 yards vs. Stanford. He is the only player in school history to have three 200-yard rushing efforts.
For the season, Best has accumulated 1,394 yards on the ground - No. 4 on the Golden Bears season list - and his 126.7 ypg average leads the Pac-10 and rates fifth in the NCAA. He has the two longest runs in the Pac-10 this year. In addition to his 84-yard sprint vs. Washington, he went 86 yards for a score at WSU.
Best's 8.0 yards per carry average is the highest for Cal's leading rusher ever, topping the 7.3 ypc of Jack Jensen (1948) and John Olszewski (1951). It is also the highest for any player in the country with at least 125 carries this season.
