Former Wildcat Mortensen Passes At 25

Former UA Wildcat distance runner Susan Mortenson passed away Friday, Dec. 5 to colon cancer at her home in Mesa, Ariz.  Mortenson was 25.

Mortenson ran for the Wildcats from 2002-05 and was a consistant point scorer for the UA women's cross country squad.  Mortensen earned Pac-10 All-Academic Second Team accolades in 2002 and made the honorable mention list in 2004. 

Mortensen was a top notch high school athlete at Corona del Sol High School in Tempe, Ariz., earning All-State honors in cross country in both 1998 and 1999.

Mortenson was married to Justin Turley, who helped her maintain a personal blog until her passing which can be accessed at  The site offers a look into Mortensen's journey from beginning to its unfortunate end in the words of Susan herself while also giving plenty of insight into colorectal cancer, the second leading cause of cancer death in the US, with approximately 147,000 people affected with it each year of which approximately 57,000 deaths will be caused. 

Services for Mortensen will be held tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Tempe South Stake Center located at 1111 E. Knox Road in Tempe, Ariz. 

There will be a viewing tonight at the same location from 6 to 8 p.m. and another viewing tomorrow at 9:30 a.m.  Any additional information can be found at the website mentioned above.
