THIS WEEK IN PAC-10 WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: As the end of the calendar year draws near, as well as the end of the semester, Pac-10 teams have a lighter schedule over the next couple of weeks. This week, eight teams are in action, but only two are playing more than one game, with California and Arizona taking on a couple of opponents.

Among the highlights for the week is a a top-10 matchup between #9/7 Cal and #5/6 Oklahoma on a neutral court; Oregon is putting its 10-year winning streak in the Papé Jam on the line, facing Georgia Tech; and UCLA puts its best start to the season since 2004-05 to the test vs. San Diego.

PAC-10 IN THE RANKINGS: Three Pac-10 teams continue to be ranked among the top 25 in both national polls. Stanford moved up to the No. 3 spot in the Associated Press ranking and No. 4 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll, while California dropped down to No. 9 and No. 7, respectively, after suffering its first loss of the season. Arizona State climbed up to No. 22 and No. 21 with two decisive wins at their home tournament last week.

When the poll was released on Nov. 24, it was the first time two Pac-10 teams have been ranked in the top five in the same week since the final poll in 1989-90. That year, Stanford was No. 2 and Washington was No. 3. Cal also achieved a first in that Nov. 24 poll, appearing in the top five in the ranking for the first time ever.

ASU ACHIEVES NEW ALL-TIME LOW: Arizona State crushed UC Irvine on Dec. 6, limiting the Anteaters to a Pac-10-record 23 points. Ironically, the previous record was when Oregon State held UCI to just 24 points almost 19 years ago to the day on Dec. 9, 1989.

On a side note, the following evening on Dec. 7, 2008, Oregon State held Portland State to a program-record 24 points, which would’ve tied the original Pac-10 mark.
