UA Prepares for Season with All-Comers Meet
Dec. 12, 2008
Saturday will mark the tenative start of the season for the UA men's and women's track and field teams host the annual All-Comers meet at Roy P. Drachman Stadium.
The meet will allow the UA team its first taste of competition before the indoor season begins January 17 at the Lumberjack Invitational in Flagstaff, Ariz.
This year's meet took on a new twist in order to get the athletes excited for the season as the team will use the meet as an opportunity to compete against each other in a formulate similar to an intersquad scrimmage.
The team captains split into three factions last month - Red, Blue and White - and proceeded to take part in a 'draft' of sorts. The captains drew numbers out of a hat to determine the draft order and proceeded to pick athletes from the entire squad to compete for their team.
The purpose of the draft and the meet is to give the kids a sense of excitement for the upcoming season and start building up the competitive fire for everyone.
The meet will be scored specially for the team, in which the top two finishers from each squad will receive points and no more than that. This meant that the captains had to be strategic with the choices as recruiting a whole teams of sprinters or a whole team of jumpers wouldn't be beneficial as only the top two could score.
This allowed the teams to put together well-rounded teams that could bring in points in a variety of different events. It will also mean some atheltes will try their hats in events not typically designated for them. One of example of this is 2008 NCAA Outdoor High Jumping Champion Liz Patterson, who may get some reps in the hurdle and sprinting events as well.
The men's and women's scores from each team will be added together at the end of the meet and the team with the overall high score will be dubbed the winner.
The meet will begin Saturday at 9 a.m. and run until around noon. All competitors of any age, shape or size are welcomed to come and particpate as the meet is not limited to just UA athletes and for $5 any competitior can particpate in as many number of events as they desire.
