Getting a Grip with Leslie Mak
Dec. 16, 2008
Never having watched an Oregon State gymnastics meet before, competing in this year¡¦s Black and Orange intra-squad was an exciting experience for me. The intra-squad was the first time for us freshmen to be in Gill and gave our whole team the opportunity to show off what we¡¦ve been working on in the gym for the past few months. For weeks leading up to the big event the gym was filled with Black vs. Orange spirit from different cheers to different t-shirts. Being the highly competitive group of girls that we are, we took this Black vs. Orange challenge pretty far. For weeks leading up to the big event, we were given challenges to try to rack up points against the other team to see who got to choose what event to start on. The Orange Team ended up earning the most points through the challenges in practice and started with vault at the intra-squad.
My experience from the intra-squad was a great one and I look forward to competing there against other schools this season. The crowd support was an excellent and I really felt like it could have been a real meet. The final result of the intra-squad was Team Black taking the win over Orange. Speaking as a slightly biased member of the Black Team, I think we squeezed the juice out of the Orange Team that night. fº But all jokes aside, everyone INCLUDING the Orange Team looked strong and had a lot of fun.
As good as our separately colored teams were, we are now reunited and back in the gym bringing together the best of Orange and Black. From what the returners on the team have said it sounds like we¡¦re far ahead from where we¡¦ve ever been before at this time of the year. After enduring a tough time of cramming and memorizing during finals week, we¡¦re now focused on cleaning up our routines in preparation for our first meet on January 2nd. Campus has gotten a lot quieter since almost everyone¡¦s gone home for the holidays, but the Oregon State gymnastics team is staying here until December 19. Although, the last thing we want is your sympathy ¡K did I mention our first meet is in Cancun, Mexico? Plus, we do have a nice break, from the 19th to the 26th, to spend the holidays with our families ... then back to the gym for a few days and off to Mexico!
Thanks for reading and keeping up with the team. We should be reporting to you soon about our success in the sunny south! Now moving past our competition within the team, Orange and Black is together and strong, and looking forward to being unstoppable this season.
Have a safe and Happy Holidays!xox Leslie
