TEMPE, Ariz. - As we count down the final days of 2008, TheSunDevils.com and Arizona State Baseball countdown the Top 12 Sun Devil Baseball moments of 2008.
#9- Five Sun Devils Earn All-American Honors
Arizona State was well represented on all the College Baseball All-American lists, landing five players on All-American teams by various outlets. Headlining the group was Ike Davis, who was named a unanimous First Team All-American. Brett Wallace was a consensus First Teamer, being named to the First Team by four organizations and Second Team by the other.
Davis earned First Team honors from Baseball America, Rivals.com, Collegiate Baseball, the NCBWA and the ABCA thanks to his .385 average, 16 homers and 76 RBI. He was also 4-1 on the mound with a 2.25 ERA and four saves.
Wallace was named to the First Team by Baseball America, Rivals.com, the NCBWA and the ABCA and was a Second Team choice of Collegiate Baseball. He won the Pac-10 Triple Crown and Pac-10 Player of the Year award for the second straight season, hitting .410 with 22 homers and 83 RBI.
Mike Leake was named a Second Team All-American by Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball and earned Third Team honors from the NCBWA. He was named the Pac-10 Pitcher of the Year thanks to his 11-3 record and 3.49 ERA.
Jason Kipnis, who was the Pac-10 Newcomer of the Year, was named a Second Team All-American by the ABCA and a Third Team selection by Baseball America. He hit .371 with 14 homers and 73 RBI while stealing 24 bases.
Tommy Rafferty was named a Second Team All-American by the NCBWA after finishing the 2008 season a perfect 12-0, with all of his Pac-10 leading 35 appearances coming out of the bullpen. He also added four saves for the Devils.
