Cougars Fall to Kansas State in Final Nonconference Game
Dec. 28, 2008
PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State women's basketball team dropped its final nonconference game of the 2008-09 season, falling to 18th-ranked Kansas State 74-58 at Friel Court, Sunday. The Cougars head into the Pacific-10 Conference portion of their season with a record of 7-4, while the Wildcats remained perfect on the season at 11-0.
'There are so many positives to take from this loss,' WSU Head Coach June Daugherty said. 'It sounds funny, but it's true. They are an undefeated, ranked team, and we had a shot. Now we will wipe the slate clean and get ready for the Pac-10.'
Senior center Heather Molzen recorded her second double-double of the season and the third of her career with 13 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. The rebounding total also tied her career high.
After staying relatively even for the first 10 minutes of the opening stanza, the Wildcats were able to build as much as a 12-point first-half lead. The Cougars outscored Kansas State 13-4 in the final six-plus minutes however, and entered intermission down only three points (33-30).
The Cougars were able to get back to within two points on three different occasions in the second half, but Kansas State's final run put WSU away. Once the Cougars clawed back to a score of 53-51 with 10-minutes, 14-seconds remaining, Kansas State closed the game on a 21-7 run to notch the victory.
The Cougars outrebounded the Wildcats by a margin of 45-36, and pulled down a season-high 27 on the offensive end. WSU also recorded only 10 turnovers, its second-lowest total of the season.
Next up for the Cougars is cross-state rival Washington to kick off the Pac-10 season. Tip-off against the Huskies is slated for 1 p.m., and the game will be televised nationally by FSN.
WSU's seven nonconference wins this season are the most since winning nine nonconference games in 1995.
