Cougar Swimming Captures Sprints Meet in Irvine

IRVINE, Calif. - Senior Elyse Peterson and junior Michaela Ahlin each won two events to lead the Washington State swimming team to its second-straight UCI/Ayers Hotel Sprints Invitational, Saturday. The Cougars added a third place finish in the UCI/Ayers Hotel Distance Invitational.
Peterson won the 100 breast (1:04.96) and 50 breast (30.00) while Ahlin touched first in the 200 fly (2:05.49) and 100 fly (57.09). Sophomore Rugile Mileisyte added a victory in the 100 free (52.79) and freshman Melissa Bogert placed first in the 50 fly (26.26).
Washington State won the meet with 503 points, just ahead of Pacific-10 rival UCLA's 494 points. Wyoming was third with 424 points.
After junior Shawna Keller (31.91) placed eighth in the 50 breast, sophomores Talor Whitaker (53.25) and Sierra Burton (53.39) finished third and fourth, respectively while Neely (53.95) came home seventh in the 100 free.
In the day's next two events, Mileisyte was sixth (28.54) in the 50 back followed by a sixth place effort from Keller (2:13.28) and a seventh place finish by Burton (2:13.68) in the 200 IM. Next was the 100 fly where Whitaker (59.75) was fifth and Bogert (1:00.30) was seventh.
Senior Afton Pickett (2:10.34) was fourth in the 200 back and Dean (2:13.90) finished seventh. The Cougars dominated the 50 fly with Ahlin (26.44) second, Whitaker (26.78) sixth and Mileisyte (27.49) eighth.
The Cougars capped the meet with Peterson (24.68) second, Bogert (25.24) sixth and Neely (25.25) seventh in the 50 free.
In the distance events, Ahlin (4:28.73) won the 400 IM while Peterson (5:09.28) was second, frehman Rachael Krager (5:11.08) fourth and Neely (5:13.29) fifth in the 500 free. WSU placed third with 81 points behind meet winner Wyoming (183 points) and host UC Irvine (107 points) and ahead of fourth place UCLA (65 points).
