This Week in Pac-10 Women's Basketball
Jan. 6, 2009
LA CITY CLASH AND CAL-WASHINGTON MATCHUP WILL BE NATIONALLY TELEVISED
THIS WEEK IN PAC-10 WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: With six of the first nine games of the conference season being decided by 10 points or less last weekend, the 2009 Pac-10 campaign is headed for another exciting road to the conference tournament. Among the contests slated for this weekend are an intra-city clash between USC and UCLA, while Washington visits California. Both are scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 11 and will be televised on Fox Sports Net.
PAC-10 IN THE RANKINGS: Stanford and California have held steady in the national rankings, with both teams remaining in the top 10 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches poll this week, while also remaining in the top 15 in the Associated Press ranking. Arizona State is receiving votes by the coaches.
When the poll was released on Nov. 24, it was the first time two Pac-10 teams have been ranked in the top five in the same week since the final poll in 1989-90. That year, Stanford was No. 2 and Washington was No. 3. Cal also achieved a first in that Nov. 24 poll, appearing in the top five in the ranking for the first time ever.
SUPER STARS: Among the winners for the WBCA Superlatives announced this week were Arizona State and California. Cal head coach Joanna Boyle was tabbed the sport's Rising Star. She has been at the Bears' helm for four years and this year led the team to its first-ever top five national ranking.
ASU boasts the nation's best visiting team locker room. Although the accommodations might be nice, visitors have a tough time leaving Wells Fargo Arena with a win, as the Sun Devils lost no more than four home contests since 1999-00, going 15-0 in 2005-06.
