Huskies Earn ITA Rankings With Season On Tap
Jan. 7, 2009
SKILLMAN, N.J. - With the start of the dual season just over a week away, the Washington women's tennis team received a No. 38 preseason ranking from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
Sophomore Venise Chan and freshman Denise Dy also picked up individual singles rankings, as well as a doubles ranking. Chan, who was ranked 28th in the fall and finished last season at No. 37, saw her ranking drop to 81st overall but will have plenty of time to climb back up with a few big wins and challenge for a second NCAA Championships bid. Dy, a San Jose, Calif. native, is ranked 112th (out of 125) and figures to play No. 2 singles for the Huskies to start the season.
Chan and Dy had a great fall playing doubles together. The two were occasional doubles partners in the junior ranks, and together reached the quarterfinals of ITA Northwest Regionals at Stanford in the fall, where they lost a tight 8-6 match to the 7th-ranked team from Cal. Next time out, Chan and Dy won the title at the San Diego State Fall Classic. They head into the spring season ranked 47th.
Regional rankings were also released today, with Chan coming in 11th, Dy at No. 17, and freshman Samantha Smith at No. 25. Chan and Dy are 6th in the region in doubles. Smith, from Los Angeles, had a terrific fall season, going 9-1 in singles and winning the `B' singles flights at the St. Mary's Invite and the SDSU Fall Classic.
The Huskies will get their season underway on Saturday, Jan. 17 vs. Portland at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. Match time is set for 3 p.m.
