Cougar Women Fall To Cal, 68-45
Jan. 8, 2009
BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) -- Ashley Walker had 25 points and 10 rebounds to lead No. 13 California to a 68-45 win over Washington State on Thursday night.
Walker, the Pac-10's leading scorer, had her 38th double-double and moved into second place on the Bears' career scoring list with 1,774 points. She scored Cal's final 10 points in the first half and finished 11-for-18 from the floor while leading the Bears to their fourth consecutive win.
California (12-2, 3-0) never trailed and led by as much as 25 in beating Washington State for the eighth straight time. The Bears haven't lost to the Cougars since Jan. 27, 2005.
Walker, a two-time All-American, moved past Jennifer Bennett (1,766) on the school's career scoring chart, trailing only Colleen Galloway (2,320).
About the only mistake Walker made came late in the second half when the senior forward was slapped with a technical foul for arguing with an official. Katie Appleton made the two free throws to pull the Cougars to 56-43 with 3:32 remaining before Adrian Kelsey made a 3-pointer and Natasha Vital followed with a quick score to seal the win for the Bears.
Cal is 3-0 in the Pac-10 for only the third time in school history and will face No. 11 Stanford on Jan. 18. The Bears are 1-2 against ranked teams this season, having beaten then-No. 2 Rutgers on Nov. 21 while falling to TCU and Oklahoma during a seven-day span in December.
Walker, whose layup with 1.8 seconds left lifted the Golden Bears past Arizona State on Sunday, was the only California player to score over the final 5:48 of the first half. After being held to nine points by the Sun Devils, she had nine of the Bears' first 14 points in the second half to help Cal take a 47-33 lead.
Perkins, the impressive freshman who played at Berkeley High School only a few minutes away from the California campus, did her best to keep the Cougars from folding but got little support from her teammates.
Appleton had 11 points but only one other Washington State player scored more than four.
