Huskies Make Quick Work Of Eastern In Opener
Jan. 10, 2009
SEATTLE - The Washington men's tennis team started the year off on the right foot today, sweeping Eastern Washington 7-0 at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in the season-opener for both teams. The Huskies (1-0) did not drop a set and improved to 7-0 all-time against the Eagles (0-1).
Patrik Fischer (Huttwil, Bern, Switzerland) showed he's not planning to give away anything during his senior year, as he drubbed Nico Riego de Dios, 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 1 singles spot. Sophomore Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan (Chennai, India) was nearly as stingy, defeating Kyle Schraeder, 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 2 position.
Sophomore Martin Kildahl (Oslo, Norway) moved all the way up to No. 3 singles from No. 6 where he closed out last season, and picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win over Art Karas. Senior David Chu's (Vancouver, B.C.) 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 4 singles over Kenneth Norling was the clinching point.
At the No. 5 singles spot, junior Derek Drabble (Johannesburg, South Africa) served and volleyed his way to a 6-1, 6-3 win over Daniel Pez. And finishing off the sweep was senior Ryo Sekiguchi (Tokyo, Japan), who downed Chad Henninger, 6-1, 6-3.
'It's been a long offseason following the end of last year,' said Anger. 'We had been improving but then had the disappointment of losing in the first round, so I was extremely to get this match going today. I liked what I saw from our guys today in terms of focus. They have the right mentality, and we're going to continue working hard because we have some very tough matches coming up this month.'
Washington opened the match with a doubles point sweep. At the top spot Kildahl and Nedunchezhiyan teamed up for the first time and defeated Schraeder and Riego de Dios, 8-5. The first match to finish was Drabble and Fischer, who won 8-2 at No. 2 doubles over Karas and Norling. At the third spot, sophomore Alex Rosinski (Tiburon, Calif.) made his dual match debut for UW, teaming with sophomore Brad Bator (Bothell, Wash.) for an 8-4 victory over Pez and Henninger.
Next week Washington hosts Portland on Friday at 5 p.m., then San Francisco on Sunday at 12 noon.
