Women's Golf Adds 2008 All-American Sweeney to Roster

Jan. 14, 2009

The No. 2 Arizona State women's golf team adds sophomore transfer Jaclyn Sweeney to their roster for the 2009 spring season. Sweeney will join Carlota Ciganda and Giulia Molinaro as newcomers to the team.

'I call her my 2008 Christmas present,' says seventh year head coach Melissa Luellen. 'It was such a fast deal that transpired for her to transfer from Oklahoma State.'

Sweeney will come to ASU with an impressive golf resume. After just a semester at Oklahoma State, Sweeney was named first-team All-American by Golfweek and honorable mention All-American by the NGCA. The Andover, Mass., native won the Big 12 individual title last year and was honored as the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year. Sweeney also finished runner-up at the Wildcat Invitational, just her second collegiate tournament. In all, Sweeney garnered five top-10 finishes early in her collegiate career.

'Her record really speaks for how great a player she is,' says Luellen. 'She's fiery, she's feisty, she's passionate and she has the talent to back it up.'

Sweeney, along with the rest of the Sun Devil squad, will open 2009 at the Northrop Grumman Invitational in Palos Verdes, Calif. The tournament begins February 9 and concludes on the 11.
