Pac-10 Q&A: Ashley Joelson, UCLA Tennis
Jan. 15, 2009
UCLA women's tennis player Ashley Joelson enters her senior season with the defending national champion Bruins. The Austin, Texas, native talk about what it means to be a Bruin and much more!
My expectations for the 2009 season are:
Everybody on the team will train hard and compete hard. Because of this, we will be a top-ranked team and possibly win another championship.
On my iPod is:
A lot of country music mixed with the best rapper alive, Lil' Wayne.
I would love to trade places for a day with:
Nobody. All my days are precious and I would hate to miss one.
My favorite team(s) to watch as a kid was (were):
Texas A&M football and the Dallas Cowboys
My favorite athlete to watch is:
My brother who is also a tennis player (he used to play for Texas A&M). He is passionate and keeps the crowd on their toes.
The talent I'd most like to have is:
I wish I could dance better.
My favorite memory as a Bruin is:
Winning the NCAAs is definately at the top. There have also been a lot of other moments that I have shared with my team that made me proud to be a Bruin. I'm blessed to be able to be on the same team and associated with these girls.
The attribute I most like about myself is:
I never give up. I never stop trying. No matter how tired I might be, it is not in my blood to stop until the match is over.
My plans after college are:
Move back to the lovely state of Texas. Possibly get my Master's Degree. Maybe teach a little tennis. Work for some type of company. I don't have any set plans. I like to keep my options open.
The best thing about UCLA is:
The women's tennis team of course. Nobody works harder or wants to win more than we do.
My funnies teammate is...because:
Stephanie Wetmore because we get each other and feed off of each other's humor.
The sport I'm the worst at is:
Golf. I can't seem to get the ball off the ground. Also, the grass I hit usually goes farther than the ball.
Something about me that others would be surprised to hear is:
I secretly dream of being an undercover FBI agent.
Which of your teammates would you like to trade places with for a day and why?
I wouldn't want to trade place with anybody, but if I had to choose I would pick Yasmin (Schnack) so that I would know what it is like to have perfect timing on my groundstrokes. I also would like to be able to hit a perfect drop shot.
The best advice I've received was....from:
'If you don't have fun off the court, then you won't have fun on the court.' My brother told me that. He basically wanted me to know that I have to enjoy my life and then everything else will fall into place.
My biggest pet peeve is...because:
When people don't give 100% in matches. I don't understand this. Why even go out to the court if you're not going to give it your all, especially when you are playing for the team?
What I miss most about Texas is:
The people. There is nothing like Texas people and the kindness and love that comes from them.
