Women's Tennis Back In Action This Weekend

STANFORD, Calif.- The Stanford women's tennis squad took the court for the first time in 2009 on Friday afternoon, with split squads competing at the Freeman Memorial Tennis Championships in Las Vegas and the NCTC Classic in Indian Wells.
At the NCTC Classic, two Cardinal doubles squads will play third round matches on Saturday. Stanford's top team of Hilary Barte and Lindsay Burdette, ranked No. 41 nationally, face Northwestern's Lauren Lui and Maria Mosolova after a first-round bye. Meanwhile, the tandem of Veronica Li and Jennifer Yen is also into the third round after posting an 8-3 win over a cross-team of Kirsten Flower and Jordan Dockendorf.
In singles play at the NCTC Classic, Barte is the lone Stanford player remaining after cruising past Lui of Northwestern 6-1, 6-2 following a first-round bye. Burdette dropped a hard-fought 7-6 (6), 2-6, 6-3 decision to UCLA's Yasmin Schnack, Yen lost to USC's Amanda Fink 6-2, 6-4 after Baylor's Zuzana Chmelarova withdrew in the first round and Li was stopped by Kirsten Flower 6-2, 6-4 in her debut match.
In singles competition, Nguyen recorded a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Georgia Tech's Christina Ngo in the first set before falling to Arizona State's Michaela Hein 6-2, 7-6 in the next round. Stanford's three other players dropped their opening round matches, as McVeigh suffered a 6-2, 6-2 setback against Baylor's Lenka Broosova, Hansen was defeated 6-2, 7-6 by Florida's Anastasia Revzina and Clayton was downed 6-4, 7-6 by Arizona State's Nadia Abdala.
In doubles, Hansen and Nguyen dropped an 8-5 decision to North Carolina's Katrina Tsang and Shinann Featherston while McVeigh and Clayton were defeated 9-7 by UNLV's Kristina Nedeltcheva and Katy Williams.
Both tournaments resume play Saturday morning.
