Barte Reaches Singles, Doubles Finals At NCTC Classic

STANFORD, Calif.- Hilary Barte advanced to the singles and doubles final of the NCTC Classic on Sunday afternoon, highlighting the opening weekend of spring competition for the Stanford women's tennis team.
The Cardinal was back in action for the first time in 2009, with split squads competing at the Freeman Memorial Tennis Championships in Las Vegas and the NCTC Classic in Indian Wells.
At the NCTC Classic, Barte dropped a hard-fought 6-3, 6-7 (8), 7-5 decision to Northwestern's Maria Mosolova in the championship match. Barte had defeated USC's Gabriella Niculsecu 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 in the quarterfinals and Georgia Tech's Noelle Hickey 6-2, 6-1 in the semis to reach the title match.
Barte then teamed with Lindsay Burdette to qualify for the doubles championship, with the duo falling to UCLA's Andrea Remynse and Yasmin Schnack 9-8 (4). Barte and Burdette, Stanford's top doubles team with a No. 41 national ranking, picked up an 8-6 win over Northwestern's Lauren Lui and Maria Mosolova (8-6) in the third round before defeating teammates Veronica Li and Jennifer Yen 8-2 in the semifinals. Li and Yen forced the all-Stanford semifinal with an 8-4 victory over UCLA's Maya Johansson and Stephanie Wetmore in the third round.
In an added singles match, Burdette defeated Oregon's Siobhan Cavan 6-1, 6-1.
At the Freeman Memorial Championships, four Cardinal players were involved in consolation matches.
In singles action, Carolyn McVeigh fell to Fresno State's Renata Kucerkova 6-4, 6-1 in the consolation quarterfinal round. In other added singles matches, Jessica Nguyen was edged by North Carolina's Katrina Tsang 6-7, 7-6, 6-0 while Courtney Clayton defeated Georgia Tech's Christina Ngo 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 before falling to Georgia Tech's Amanda McDowell 6-2, 6-0.
In consolation doubles, Nguyen and Logan Hansen were upended by Fresno State's Melanie Gloria and Tinesta Rowe 8-5 while McVeigh and Clayton dropped an 8-2 decision to Arizona State's Ashlee Brown and Sianna Simmons.
Both doubles teams rebounded for victories in added matches on Sunday. Nguyen and Hansen cruised past Florida's Marit Boonstra and Anastasia Revzina 8-2 while McVeigh and Clayton handled Oregon's Pavlina Smatova and Carmen Seremeta 8-2.
Stanford faces UC Davis on Thursday, Jan. 22, in its season opener at 3 p.m. at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
