Golden Bears Emerge Perfect on Final Day of Winter Invitational

BERKELEY - The No. 2-ranked California women's tennis team achieved perfection as the Golden Bears won all of their matches on the final day of the Cal Winter Invitational at Hellman Tennis Complex in Berkeley, Calif. No. 13-ranked sophomore Marina Cossou was named the singles champion for her three wins (two on the top court and one on the second court) and shared the doubles title with senior Claire Ilcinkas as the No. 7-ranked duo won all three of their matches on the top doubles court. Cal faced Saint Mary's in singles matches and Cossou completed her perfect weekend with a 6-1, 3-0 win over the Gaels' Claire Soper as she retired with an injury. Meanwhile, fellow sophomore Mari Andersson claimed a 6-2, 6-2 win against Ana Chikhikvishvili on the top court. No. 52-ranked freshman Jana Juricova posted a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Marah Calvo on the next court over while fellow frosh Stephany Chang got a 6-0, 6-2 win against Kathryn Malec on the seventh court.

The Bear seniors enjoyed another victorious day as No. 15 Bojana Bobusic claimed a 6-2, 6-3 win over Molly Aloia, No. 30 Claire Ilcinkas took a 6-2, 6-1 win against Erin Young and Marion Ravelojaona dropped Alita Fisher in a 6-1, 6-2 decision.

Cal also won all four of its doubles matches against Cal Poly today, led by No.7-ranked Cossou and Ilcinkas, who took an 8-5 win against Brittany Blalock and Steffi Wong. Andersson and Juricova also won their third match of the weekend as they walked away with an 8-4 win over Amy Markhoff and Suzie Matzenauer. Bobusic and Ravelojoana got over the hump and fought for their first win together as they overpowered Diane Filip and Maria Malec in an 8-5 victory. Cal's freshman duo of Chang and Visico also maintained Winter Invitational perfection as they defeated Shannon Brady and Whitney Eves, 8-5.

The Bears return to action in two weeks as they play host to Long Beach State, Washington and North Carolina State as one of 16 host sites for the first annual ITA Kick-Off Weekend. Cal will take on the Niners on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 10 a.m. and the Huskies face the Wolf Pack in a match to begin not before 2 p.m. The losers of the first two matches will face each other on Sunday, Feb. 1 at 10 a.m. and the winners will play at 2 p.m. Please check CalBears.com for more information and updates.
