Cats Add Third Mid-Year Player
Jan. 20, 2009
TUCSON - Arizona coaches have added a third mid-year junior college transfer in Shane Zink, a big offensive tackle from Shasta College in Redding, Calif.
Zink, 19, has three years' eligibility after playing one year at Shasta out of Redding's Enterprise High School, where he was a two-sport star. He enrolled at UA this week.
Zink earned Bay Valley Conference first-team offense honors in his lone year at Shasta. He helped lead the Hornets to a 9-2 record, the BVC Championship and a victory over Monterey Peninsula College in the Bulldog Bowl in November.
At Enterprise, in basketball as a senior he was a 2008 first-team All-Eastern League center, and area MVP by the local newspaper, Redding Record-Searchlight, and a second-team All-Northern Section selection in 2007 as a tackle.
UA lost two starters at tackle off its 8-5 Pioneer Las Vegas Bowl championship club, junior left tackle Eben Britton -- who opted for the NFL Draft -- and senior right tackle James Tretheway, who took over after an injury to Adam Grant after four games and didn't let go.
Arizona coach Mike Stoops said 'Zink has good size and athletic skills. It's great to have him for spring ball. We need competition along the offensive front and expect he'll step right in and contend.'
Zink joins cornerback Marcus Benjamin of Arizona Western College and offensive tackle Jack Julsing of College of the Desert as a mid-year transfer.
