Pac-10 Q&A: Elaine Breeden, Stanford Swimming

Jan. 20, 2009

My expectations for the 2009 season are...
I have high expectation for this season. Our team is the best it has been in my 3 years at Stanford and we are capable of some great things. I can't wait for the championship meets!

How did it feel to be the national champion in the 200 fly in 2007?
It was different from any other national championship I have ever won because I really felt like I was doing it for my team and not just for myself. It was a great moment in my Stanford swimming career and I hope to repeat it at some point!

On my iPod is...
I listen to a lot of rock and alternative, pretty chill stuff for the most part. I don't listen to traditional 'pump up' music at meets- I'm more into Jack Johnson, Lifehouse, The Eagles, Journey, even Josh Groban. It keeps me relaxed and easy-going when I'm at high-pressure competitions.

I would love to trade places for a day with...
My cat. I have always been jealous that he gets to nap in the sun all day while I run around from class to practice.

My favorite team to watch as a kid was...
We don't have any big pro teams in Kentucky so I didn't watch many sports growing up. I have always been a swimming fan so I guess the USA National Swim Team was my favorite.

The talent I'd most like to have is...
In Harry Potter they can do this thing where they disappear on the spot and reappear in another place instantly. I wish I could do that so I could go home for dinner whenever I wanted!

My favorite memory as a Cardinal is...
One of my favorite memories as a Cardinal is from a meet we went to in Canada this November. Our team had a ton of fun and everyone swam really fast. My teammate, Julia Smit, broke a world record and Stanford swept the final relay, putting 12 of my teammates on the podium.

My plans after college are...
My plans are somewhat undecided at this point. I am going to graduate in 2010 but I am planning on swimming until 2012, so I will probably be around Stanford at least until then. I want to stay out here as long as possible!

The best thing about Stanford is...
Everything. There is nothing I don't like about Stanford- the classes are fun, the people are incredible, and the athletics are unparalleled. It is beautiful all the time and I absolutely love it.

The sport I'm the worst at is...
Equestrian. When I was young I tried horseback riding but I was more into racing than going over jumps. The last time I ever rode was in a Christmas themed show where I tied for last place with the Santa who was sitting in the middle of the rink on a horse. I don't think I was made for land sports.

Something about me that others would be surprised to hear is...
I love to cook. My grandmothers are amazing cooks and I love learning how to put everything together to make a good meal.

The best advice I've received was....
To compete with two things in mind: excellence and humility. This advice reminds me to always compete to the best of my ability while remembering that all of my actions affect my teammates and competitors.

What I miss most about Kentucky is....
The thing I miss the most about Kentucky is being around my family all the time. We are all really close- my two sisters, grandparents, twelve of my first cousins- we all live within ten minutes of each other. It has been hard being so far away from them all but my experiences at Stanford have definitely been worth it.
