Jan. 22, 2009

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) -- Ashley Walker had 20 points and seven rebounds and No. 8 California held off Oregon State for a 77-72 victory Thursday night.

Alexis Gray-Lawson added 19 points and Natasha Vital 18 for the Golden Bears (15-2, 6-0 Pac-10), who avoided a letdown after a big home victory against rival Stanford on Sunday.

Vital scored 14 of her team's last 20 points in the final seven minutes.

California led by one at halftime and by as many as nine in the second half before Oregon State (11-6, 2-5) slowly cut into the deficit.

Oregon State eventually closed within three, but the Golden Bears made their last six free throws for the win.

Oregon State's Brittney Davis scored 20 of her game-high 24 points in the second half.
