UCLA's Defense Clamps Down On Washington State In 83-48 Win

Los Angeles, Calif. - UCLA held its second-straight opponent to under 50 points and defeated Washington State by a score of 83-48 on Thursday evening in Pauley Pavilion. It was UCLA's 10th win in 11 home games this season.
The Bruins used a series of runs and a season-best 60.9 first half shooting percentage to jump out to a 38-22 advantage at the half. The Bruins used a 13-1 run early in the game to turn a three-point deficit into a 16-7 lead. After the Cougars pulled to within four, 22-18, at 7:42, UCLA scored nine unanswered points to increase its lead to 31-18 with 5:12 to play in the half, kicking off a 16-4 run to close the half with a 16-point lead. UCLA made eight of its first 11 shots on its way to the season-high first half shooting percentage.
UCLA extended its lead early in the second half, going on a 14-3 run to take a 52-29 lead with 14:08 left on the clock. Washington State closed to within 14 with 9:10 to play, but the Bruins answered with a 21-3 run to take a 33-point lead, 76-43, with 3:23 left in the contest. UCLA held Washington State to just one field goal in the final eight minutes and to just six overall in the second half. The Bruins outshot the Cougars in the game, 55.4%-30.8%.
Sophomore guard Doreena Campbell led the Bruins in scoring for the fifth straight game with a total of 15 points. Also in double-digits were sophomore forward Nina Earl, who scored 12 points on 4-for-5 shooting from the field and pulled down a team-high five rebounds, and junior guard Erica Tukiainen, who had 11 points.
In holding WSU to 48 points, UCLA limited it second-straight opponent to under 50 points for the first time since the 1988-89 season when it held Loyola Marymount and Northern Arizona to 46 points each in December 2-3 of 1988. UCLA had defeated Arizona 48-38 in its previous outing on Jan. 17.
UCLA (13-4, 4-2 in the Pac-10) will next host Washington on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 2 pm, while Washington State (8-9, 1-5) faces USC.
