No. 6 USC Men Start Dual Match Action
Jan. 23, 2009
The No. 6 USC men's tennis team are pulling double duty in their first day of 2009 dual match play this weekend. The Trojans will host Loyola Marymount and Sacramento State on Saturday (Jan. 24) at Marks Stadium to kick off their opening weekend at home. USC starts the day with a 10 a.m. match against the Lions before turning to face the Hornets at 2:30 p.m. later in the day.
Ranked No. 6 in the 2009 preseason rankings, the USC men are coming off a 2008 trip to the NCAA Quarterfinals, where the Trojans finished the season with a 22-5 overall record. It's been decades since the Trojans last faced a team from Loyola Marymount in men's tennis, and this will be the first-ever meter between USC and Sacramento State.
This year, the USC men return All-American Robert Farah as half of last year's Pac-10 and NCAA doubles championship pair. Farah also was an All-Pac-10 First Team honoree, and was joined with All-Pac-10 accolades by Jaak Poldma, who returns as a sophomore for the Trojans. Farah stands tallest of the Trojans in the ITA preseason rankings, tabbed at No. 7 in singles and fresh off a championship run at the Sherwood Cup. USC newcomers Matt Kecki and Steve Johnson are tightly packed at No. 54 and No. 58, respectively, and USC's lone senior this year, Abdullah Magdas, ranks No. 64 in the national singles rankings.
In doubles play, Farah and Johnson are ranked No. 2 in the nation after taking second at the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships during the fall. And ranked No. 46 is the all-freshman pair of Andrew Kells / Daniel Nguyen.
