Jan. 23, 2009
The Arizona State swimming and diving teams knew they had a tough day ahead of them competing against No. 2 Stanford. Both teams fell, 167.5-113.5 for the women and 156-99 for the men. Despite the loss, several Sun Devils had strong swims.
Ashton Aubry, Micky Benedetti and Jordyn Green were all dual winners for the Sun Devils. Aubry took first in the 200 fly reaching the wall before two-time All-American Whitney Spence. The junior then tied three-time All-American Liz Smith in the 100 fly with a time of 54.81.
Benedetti swept the diving events. The senior outscored Stanford's Dwight Dumais by about eight points in the 1-meter and followed up by winning the 3-meter by almost 50 points. Benedetti scored 347.55 in the 1-meter and 404.03 in the 3-meter. Both scores qualify him for the NCAA Zone Meet.
Freshman Jordyn Green continued her outstanding freshman season. The Reno native notched two wins in the breaststroke events. Green clocked in at 1:03.20 in the 100 breast and beat teammate Sara McDaniel to the wall. In the 200 breast, Green finished in 2:17 flat to earn the victory.
Other notable swims for ASU included the debut of transfer Tony Cisneros. The West Virginia transfer placed second in the 50 free with a time of 20.85. Sean Boyle placed second in the 100 fly, touching in at 49.53. One of the team's most versatile swimmers, Jamie Martinez was runner-up in the 200 back, finishing in 2:02.88. Vinicius Waked placed third in the 200 free as did Jen Beckberger on the women's side.
The Sun Devils end their 2009 home schedule tomorrow. The team will face Cal and will mark the last time 10 seniors compete at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. The first race starts at noon.
