Huskies Score Big First Road Win Over BYU

Jan. 24, 2009

PROVO, Utah - The Washington women's tennis team scored a very impressive 6-1 win over 47th-ranked Brigham Young today in its first road match of the season. It is the first road win over a ranked opponent for the Huskies since 2005. Washington improves to 2-0 on the season.

BYU figured to pose a major challenge for the Huskies, as the Cougars (1-2) upended the 44th-ranked Cougars from Washington State on Friday by a 6-1 margin, but after winning a close doubles point, the Huskies came out and won every first set in singles play, and went on to win five of the six matches in straight sets.

81st-ranked sophomore Venise Chan (Hong Kong, China) won her sixth-straight match dating back to the fall with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over McCall Jones at No. 1 singles. Freshman Samantha Smith (Los Angeles, Calif.) posted a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles, giving UW a 3-0 lead and improving to 11-1 in her young career.

The clinching point came at No. 2 singles, where freshmen Denise Dy (San Jose, Calif.) defeated 96th-ranked Kristina Doerr, 6-4, 6-4. Dy, ranked 112th, already has wins over three ranked opponents.

With only four indoor courts, the fifth and sixth singles matches could not start until other matches had finished, but once underway, juniors Joyce Ardies (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Aleksandra Malovic (Apeldoorn, the Netherlands) both rolled to lopsided wins. Ardies defeated Elle Carney, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5, and Malovic was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Elizaveta Ezhova at the sixth spot.

BYU's only point came at No. 3 singles, where Romina Nedakovic came back from a first set loss to defeat sophomore Lina Xu (Shanghai, China), 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.

The doubles point came down to the No. 1 doubles match between Chan and Dy for UW and Jones and Price for BYU. The Cougars rallied to tie the match at 7-7, but Chan and Dy, ranked 47th, came through in the final two games for a 9-7 win. Coupled with Malovic and Xu's 8-4 victory at No. 3 doubles, UW gained the early 1-0 lead.

Washington will now head to Salt Lake City to face the 50th-ranked Utah Utes tomorrow, Jan. 25, at 11 a.m. Pacific time.
