TUCSON – The Arizona women’s swimming and diving team had Stanford right where it wanted them, but couldn’t close the door. The Cardinal took the meet, 150.5-147.5, to top the Wildcats for the sixth straight year in a dual meet.

After Liz Smith of Stanford won the 400 IM, the Cardinal closed Arizona’s lead to just two points, which meant the winner of the 400 free relay would win the meet outright. Lara Jackson led off for Arizona and put her team in the early lead. Justine Schluntz and Anna Turner both held off charges from the Stanford relay team. As the fourth leg began, both team’s were even. Stanford’s Julia Smit outpaced Taylor Baughman after the final turn and Stanford claimed the meet.

As the final relay would indicate, the women’s meet was tightly contested. Arizona won the opening 400 medley relay as Ana Agy, Annie Chandler, Jackson and Schluntz turned in a time of 3:40.33.

The women took the long distance freestyle events with Susana Helms winning the 500 free in 4:49.92 and Alyssa Anderson claiming the 1000 free in 9:51.23.

Smit of Stanford lived up to expectations as she won the 100 free, 100 back, 200 back, and closed out the final anchor leg of the 400 free relay to win the meet.

On the men’s side, Stanford topped Arizona 191-107, as Arizona only won two events the entire afternoon

Jack Brown won the men’s 400 IM with a time of 3:54.31 followed by teammates Austen Thompson and Andrew Callahan.

Arizona closed the day on a good note as it won the 400 free relay with strong performances from Nicolas Nilo and Joel Greenshields.

Nilo finished as the runner-up in the both the men’s 100 and 200 freestyle events with times of 43.41 and 1:36.26, respectively.

In diving events, Ben Grado won both the one- and three-meter events for the second consecutive day. The sophomore posted scores of 373.43 and 393.60, respectively. Ainsley Oliver finished second in both women’s diving events.

Arizona will travel to Austin, Texas next week to compete against Texas and SMU in a two-day dual meet that begins Friday, Jan. 30.
