The California Golden Bears women's gymnastic team posted their highest team score of the season, but it wasn't enough to edge the No. 2 ranked UCLA Bruins in Sunday's meet in Los Angeles. The Bruins won the meet with a 197.125 to Cal's 190.575.

Junior Sophia Hocini once again paced the Bears as their top all-arounder, posting a career-high 38.875. Hocini scored a 9.800 on the beam, matching her career-best score on the beam and one of three 9.800 scores the Bears received on the aparatus. Senior Joanna Bennett also earned a 9.800 on the beam. Sophomore Avery Gee scored a career-best 9.800 as well. Even with three 9.800's, the Bears couldn't keep pace with the Bruins who had a pair of 9.900 scores to help them edge the Bears 49.100 to 48.400 on the beam.

The Bears had a very solid meet. All five of the Bears who competed in all four events posted career-high all-around scores. Hocini had a career high 9.775 on the bars and did not post a score below 9.550 to score her 38.875. Avery Gee had a career-high 9.550 on the bars to go along with her career-best beam score to push her all-around score to a career-best 38.800. Sophomore Stephanie Cheng's top score came in the beam with a 9.725, leading to her 38.500 all-around score. Joanna Bennett's all-around total of 37.900 was also a career-best. Freshman Erica Varon raised her all-around score by 1.425 over last week's mark.

The Bears also posted season-high team scores in each event.

The loss drops Cal to 0-5 on the season and 0-2 in the Pac-10.

The Bears will be back at home next weekend, hosting Washington and Illinois State Sunday, Feb. 1, at 12 noon at Haas Pavilion.
