Women's Tennis Downs Utah, 7-0

Jan. 25, 2009

SALT LAKE CITY - The Huskies picked up their second road win over a top-50 opponent in as many days this afternoon, as the UW swept 50th-ranked Utah, 7-0, at the Eccles Tennis Center. Washington (3-0) swept the doubles point and lost only one set in singles play.

Washington came through in every singles match, but only freshman Samantha Smith's 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles fell under the category of a routine win. Smith gave UW a 2-0 lead with her victory over Lisa Johnson. Fellow freshman Denise Dy was the next Husky in the win column, as she held off Evgenia Kryuchkova, 7-5, 6-3, at No. 2 singles.

The clinching point came from 81st-ranked sophomore Venise Chan, as she edged Anastasia Putilina at No. 1 singles by a 7-5, 6-4 count. Chan has now won seven-straight matches and is 10-2 for the year.

After prevailing, 7-5, in a tough first set against Lexi Provancha, junior Aleksandra Malovic ran away with the second set, 6-0, at No. 6 singles to extend UW's lead. Sophomore Lina Xu then wrapped up a 7-6, 6-3 victory at the third position over Erin Monson, and Joyce Ardies finished the sweep at fourth singles, coming back from a set down to defeat Leigh Walsh, 4-6, 6-4, (10-7).

Doubles was tight as well but the Huskies were able to prevail in each spot. Chan and Dy, ranked 47th, got a 9-7 win over Putilina and Johnson that sealed the doubles point for the Huskies. Ardies and Smith were 8-4 winners at the second spot against Kryuchkova and Walsh, and Malovic and Xu defeated Monson and Karina Bourdages, 8-6, at No. 3 doubles.

Prior to UW's win over BYU on Saturday, it had been over three years since the women's team had defeated a ranked opponent on the road. Now the Huskies have accomplished the feat twice in back-to-back days.

Washington continues its road stretch with a new fixture on its schedule, the ITA National Team Indoor Qualifying draw. Next week fifteen schools will host four-team qualifiers, with the winners advancing to the final site of the National Team Indoor Championships. The Huskies will be on 2nd-ranked Cal's home turf, opening up against 36th-ranked North Carolina State on Friday, Jan. 30, then playing either Cal or 48th-ranked Long Beach State on Saturday.
