STANFORD, Calif. - Junior center Jayne Appel of the Stanford women's basketball team was named the U.S. Bank Pac-10 Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday. The announcement marks the third time this season that Appel has captured the weekly honor, and sixth overall in her collegiate career.
Appel's stellar play on the road last weekend helped the Cardinal to a sweep of Oregon and Oregon State, improving Stanford's overall mark to 15-4 and to 6-1 in Pac-10 play. The Pleasant Hill, Calif. native averaged 20.0 points, 11.0 rebounds and 4.50 assists per game over the two games while also shooting an incredible 84.2 percent (16-for-19) from the field. She also posted her eighth and ninth double-doubles of the season.
The Stanford center opened her weekend with a 22-point, 10-rebound performance in Thursday's 85-57 win at Oregon, then followed up with 18 points and 12 rebounds in Saturday's 69-54 victory over Oregon State. Saturday night, Appel keyed the Cardinal's comeback from a 28-27 halftime deficit by scoring 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting in the second half.
Appel's weekend performance confirmed her standing as one of the Pac-10's best all-around performers, as she sits in the conference's top three of four statistical categories: field-goal percentage (63.3 percent - first), blocked shots (1.8 bpg - first), rebounding (9.6 rpg - second) and scoring (15.2 ppg - third).
Stanford returns home this weekend, hosting USC Thursday night at 7 p.m. before welcoming the UCLA Bruins to Maples Pavilion for a 1 p.m. contest Sunday that will be televised on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area.
