Stanford's Appel Named U.S. Bank Pac-10 Player of the Week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.-- STANFORD junior center Jayne Appel was named the U.S. Bank Pac-10 Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 19-25, her third honor of the season, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Appel, a native of Pleasant Hill, Calif., led Stanford's sweep of Oregon and Oregon State on the road last week. The center averaged a double-double (20.0 points and 11.0 rebounds) and shot a combined 84.2 percent from the floor, pushing the No. 11-ranked Cardinal's Conference record to 6-1 and 15-4 overall.
At Oregon, Appel made 91 percent of her shots (10-for-11), finishing the game with 22 points, also adding 10 rebounds and five assists. Against the Beavers, Appel again shot well from the floor. She scored 18 points on 6-for-8 shooting and grabbed 12 boards.
Appel currently ranks third in the nation and leads the Conference in field goal percentage with 63.3 percent. She ranks second in rebounding with 9.6 rebounds per game and her 15.2 points per game is good for fourth best in the Pac-10.
This is the sixth career Pac-10 Player of the Week honor for Appel and the 65th all-time for Stanford.
Stanford hosts USC on Thursday, Jan. 29 and UCLA on Sunday, Feb. 1 on Fox Sports Net.
