Jan. 26, 2009
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Husky sophomore Venise Chan has been named the Pac-10 Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 19-25, the conference office announced today. Chan led Washington (3-0) to a pair of road victories against BYU and Utah over the weekend.
Chan, a native of Hong Kong, China, went a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles for the 38th-ranked Huskies, who defeated No. 47 BYU, 6-1 on Saturday and then swept No. 50 Utah on Sunday. Washington had not defeated a ranked opponent on the road since 2005, yet did it in back to back days this weekend.
Chan, ranked 81st in singles, defeated BYU's McCall Jones and Utah's Anastasia Putilina at the No. 1 singles spot, and her win at Utah was the clinching point. She also teamed with freshman Denise Dy to pull out a pair of 9-7 victories at No. 1 doubles.
Chan is now 10-2 on the year in singles, having won seven-straight, and is 9-1 in doubles matches with Dy. This is her second career Pac-10 Player of the Week honor, and the third all-time for Washington.
Washington will continue its six-match road trek in Berkeley this coming weekend, as UW will take part in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships qualifying rounds. Second-ranked Cal hosts a four-team draw that includes Washington, North Carolina State, and Long Beach State, with the winner advancing to the National Team Indoor finals. The Huskies play NC State on Friday, Jan. 30 at 2 p.m. then either Cal or Long Beach State on Saturday.
