Jan. 26, 2009
THIS WEEK IN PAC-10 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Heading into the mid-way point of the Pac-10 slate, the first half of the round-robin comes to a close this week. On the schedule are a pair of nationally televised contests on Fox Sports Net (FSN), with Arizona State putting its win streak on the line at Washington on Saturday, while UCLA and Stanford battle on Sunday.
The Bruins also make a stop at California to complete the tour of the top-10 foes, while USC also travels to the Bay Area. ASU faces Washington, and Arizona makes the trip to the state of Washington.
After Oregon takes a break for a non-conference game vs. Portland, it hosts Oregon State over the weekend for the first installment of the Civil War.
PAC-10 IN THE RANKINGS: Winning its eighth game in a row, California moved up slightly in the Associated Press poll this week, ranking seventh while Stanford, after two decisive wins over the weekend, jumped back into the top 10 at No. 9. Arizona State is receiving two votes by the writers this week, as well. In the ESPN/USA Today Coaches poll last week, Cal was ranked No. 6, while the Cardinal were No. 11. Both UCLA and Oregon State have received votes in one or both polls earlier this season.
When the poll was released on Nov. 24, it was the first time two Pac-10 teams have been ranked in the top five in the same week since the final poll in 1989-90. That year, Stanford was No. 2 and Washington was No. 3. Cal also achieved a first in that Nov. 24 poll, appearing in the top five in the ranking for the first time ever.
