Bruins Down Broncos, 6-1
Jan. 27, 2009
LOS ANGELES - The No. 4 UCLA men's tennis team prevailed over a tough Boise State team at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on Tuesday, posting an impressive 6-1 victory in its first true test of the 2009 season. The Bruins now take a 2-0 record into this weekend's ITA Team Indoor qualifying event at the LATC.
The doubles point came down to the wire Tuesday, as UCLA looked to be in control until the Broncos mounted a spirited comeback. After the Bruins took a quick 8-2 victory at court No. 2, it looked like the point would be clinched at the No. 1 spot, where Haythem Abid and Amit Inbar enjoyed a 7-5 advantage over Boise State's Kean Feeder/James Meredith. The Bronco duo had different plans however, winning the next four games to take the set 9-7. All attention then turned to court No. 3, where the Bruins and Broncos were deadlocked at 5-5. UCLA's Michael Look and Nick Meister took control from that point, winning the next three games for an 8-5 victory to clinch the doubles point.
The bottom half of the Bruin lineup was the story in singles, as Look (court No. 4), Meister (court No. 5) and Inbar (court No. 6) all posted straight-set victories within seconds of each other to give UCLA a 4-0 lead and the victory. The match was actually clinched at court No. 5, where Meister was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Boise State's Stanley Sarapanich.
Junior Matt Brooklyn was also a straight-set winner Tuesday, defeating Feeder, 6-3, 6-3. Senior Harel Srugo battled back from a set down at court No. 3, eventually defeating Meredith, 5-7, 6-2 (10-6).
Boise State's (3-1) lone point came at court No. 1, where 22nd-ranked Clancy Shields downed Abid, 6-3, 6-2.
UCLA faces South Alabama in the opening round of ITA Team Indoor qualifying this Friday at 1:00 p.m. That match will be at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
