Hopfner-Hibbs, Zamarripa Keep Weekly Gymnastics Honors Limelight on UCLA for Third Week
Jan. 27, 2009
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- UCLA's freshmen tandem of Elyse Hopfner-Hibbs and Vanessa Zamarripa were named Pac-10 Gymnast of the Week and Pac-10 Special Performance of the week, respectively, for Jan. 20-26, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today. The accolades mark the first time in this 2009 women's gymnastics season that the Conference's weekly nods have gone to teammates.
Hailing from Toronto, Ont., Hopfner-Hibbs tackled a full program last weekend, competing in the all-around twice in three days. On Friday evening she topped a Bruin sweep of the all-around (39.525) and was the poster child of UCLA's deciding victory over Cal State Fullerton (196.6-193.875). In addition to the all-around, Hopfner-Hibbs captured three individual titles at Fullerton, including beam (9.925), floor (9.9), and bars (9.85, tie). Every performance by Hopfner-Hibbs on Friday night resulted in a career-high mark.
Showing remarkable consistency and excellence, Hopfner-Hibbs came back two days later against CALIFORNIA to claim two additional victories and third-place honors in the all-around (39.45). Setting standards of 9.9 (T-1st) on both beam and floor, she compiled a total of four 9.9+ scores over the weekend and recorded no performance weaker than 9.825. The 2008 Canadian Olympian improved her season all-around average to 39.217, moving into the top 20 in the national rankings (19th). She now also ranks sixth nationally on beam (9.887 average). Hopfner-Hibbs' high weekend marks led the Bruins to a double dose of season-best team scores, with UCLA's 197.125 on Sunday serving as the first time the team has crossed the 197 threshold in two years.
Just one week after garnering Pac-10 Gymnast of the Week (Jan. 13-19) accolades, Zamarripa earned a perfect 10 on vault at Cal State Fullerton on Friday. The first gymnast in the nation this year to score a perfect mark on vault, the O'Fallon, Ill., native is also the first gymnast in the Conference to record a 10.0 on any apparatus in 2009. Zamarripa performed a perfect Yurchenko layout full with a stuck landing to catapult her season average on vault to 9.925, the top rating in the nation. Furthermore, she has won vault titles on the apparatus in three consecutive meets. Zamarripa also claimed first-place honors on bars in both of UCLA's dual meets this weekend, marking career-highs of 9.95 (bars) and 39.5 (all-around, 2nd) against the Golden Bears.
