Jan. 27, 2009
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - The #6 USC men's tennis team pinned up win Number 3 on the year with a quick 6-1 decision over #54 San Diego today at Marks Stadium. Thanks to a smooth roll through doubles play, the Trojans picked up steam with two quick singles wins and later put the match away with Robert Farah's victory at the No. 1 slot. Now 3-0 in dual match play, USC turns to host the ITA National Indoor qualifying rounds later this week, opening against Mississippi State on Friday (Jan. 30).
Against the Toreros today, USC opened things with a decisive 8-1 win from #2 Farah/Johnson at the No. 1 position. The second-ranked duo gave up an early game when the Toreros held serve, but the Trojans won out the rest of the way for a solid start to the match. At No. 2 Magdas/Nguyen decided the point with an 8-6 win after warding off a 4-4 lockup. And Kells/Poldma rounded out the doubles with an 8-5 decision at No. 3 to bring up singles play.
At the No. 4 and No. 5 positions, respectively, senior Abdullah Magdas and freshman Matt Kecki made quick work of their Torero opponents. Magdas peeled out to a 6-1, 6-2 win over Nicola Bubnic to get USC ahead 2-0 in the match, and then Kecki pounded out a 6-3, 6-0 win over John Devillier to make it 3-0. San Diego would gather in one point on the day with Dean Jackson's6-3, 6-4 win over sophomore Jaak Poldma at No. 2 to pull the Toreros to 3-1 in the match, but the Trojans controlled things down the stretch. Farah's 6-2, 6-3 win over Charl Worlmarans sealed the deal with USC ahead 4-1, leaving matches going at No. 3 and No. 6. Junior Jason McNaughton knocked off his opponent first with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Nils Schive at No. 5. And putting the finishing touches on the match from his No. 3 slot was freshman Steve Johnson, who tacked up a 6-3, 6-4 victory with one last break to win it over Chris Coetzee.
