Four Golden Bears Recognized By Soccer Buzz

BERKELEY - Four members of the California women's soccer team were named to the Soccer Buzz All-West Region Team on Jan. 26. Sophomore forward Alex Morgan was placed on the second team, junior midfielder Katie Oakes on the third team and freshmen defender Danielle Brunache and midfielder Katrin Omarsdottir were named to the All-Freshman West Region Team.
Morgan led the Bears in 2008 with nine goals. She scored the eventual gamewinner against Korea DPR on Dec. 7 to help the U.S. Under-20 National Team to a gold medal at the 2008 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup. Morgan scored four goals over the course of the tournament and won the Bronze Ball as the tournament's third-best player as well as the Bronze Shoe as the third-leading scorer.
Oakes scored two goals in 2008 for California, both gamewinners. Oakes led Cal to 1-0 victories over Cal State Northridge on Sept. 12, 2008, and Oregon State on Oct. 10.
Omarsdottir had two goals, two assists and one game-winning goal in her freshman campaign at Cal. The Reykjavik, Iceland, native spent time in 2008 competing with the Icelandic National Team.
Brunache played in all 20 games of the 2008 season, scoring two goals, both of which came in the 2-1 win over BYU on Sept. 26, 2008. Brunache will participate in a super-camp with the U.S. National Youth Team in Chula Vista, Calif.
This year, the Bears finished the season at a 10-9-1 overall clip and went 3-5-1 in the competitive Pac-10, which saw six of its teams advance to the NCAA Tournament. Cal earned an at-large selection to the tournament, marking Cal's 16th playoff bid, the 10th in the last 11 years and the fifth consecutive. The Bears fell, 2-1, to No. 7 Florida in Gainesville, Fla., in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
