UCLA Tops 2009 Pac-10 Preseason Softball Coaches' Poll

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.-- UCLA has been selected by the Pacific-10 softball coaches as the top team in the Conference to start the 2009 season.  The Bruins received 43 points and three first-place votes in the annual coaches' poll.  Last year's national champion, ARIZONA STATE was voted second by the coaches, garnering two first-place votes and 41 points total.  

Also earning first-place votes, WASHINGTON, who was voted third in the poll, received two first-place votes and earned 36 points overall.  ARIZONA took fourth with 34 points, while STANFORD, which received the final first place vote, was selected fifth with 31 points.  CALIFORNIA received 19 points to finish sixth in polling.  OREGON and OREGON STATE round out the poll tying for seventh place with 10 points each.

The Pac-10 kicks off regular season action on Friday, Feb. 6 with all eight teams competing in tournament play.  The Conference season opens March 27.

Results of the poll are as follows.  Seven points were awarded for a first-place vote, six points for a second-place vote and so on.  Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team.
