Gymcat Blog: Deanna Graham
Jan. 29, 2009
Deanna Graham, born and raised in Tucson, and grew up training in a local gym (Springs), reflects on her first experience competing as a GymCat for the first time in front on her home crowd last Friday.
Competing gymnastics in college has been my dream ever sense my mom took me to my first U of A meet when I was seven years old. I remember walking into the McKale Center and being completely overwhelmed and amazed. I then looked down at the collegiate gymnasts warming up and I remember feeling a connection. I knew immediately that I shared the same love and passion for the sport as they did, but even more, I knew one day that would be me down there in that beautiful sparkling leotard showing that same love and passion.
Here I am 11 years later living my dream and being a part of the team I have grown up watching and admiring. Standing behind the curtain last Friday night waiting impatiently to see my face come up on the screen, was one of the most emotionally packed few seconds of my life. I was exploding with excitement and disbelief, but at the same time attempting to keep my calm and focused. I couldn't believe that this moment was finally here. The moment that I have dreamed of and spent so many years of in practice working towards was finally here. It finally all made sense to me. I felt everything I ever thought I would feel, and competing in that arena was better than I ever imagined. Being able to compete with such an amazing team full of my best friends, for people who love the sport just like I do is an experience that cannot be described. I hope everyone watching has just as much fun as we do as a team!
